Well, if you’re like me and you love them fancy French dishes, especially the ones with potatoes, then you might’ve heard about this French Onion Potato Bake. It’s got them onions, potatoes, and a creamy, cheesy sauce that’ll make ya wanna go back for more. Now, I ain’t no chef, but I’ll tell ya how I make this dish, and it’s as simple as can be. The folks in town love it, so I thought I’d share it with ya.
First thing’s first, you gotta get your potatoes. You can use them regular ones, don’t gotta be picky, but I like the starchy kind. They bake up nice and soft in the oven. Peel ‘em up and slice ‘em thin, real thin. If ya got a slicer, that’s good, but a knife works just fine too. Don’t worry if they ain’t perfect, just get ‘em nice and even. You’ll need a lot of them slices, so don’t be shy with the potatoes. I usually take about six or seven of ‘em, depending on how big ya want your dish.
Once you got them sliced, set them aside for a bit. Now, let’s get to that sauce. It’s what makes the whole thing taste so good. You’re gonna need some heavy cream—about a cup or so. Then, grab a packet of that French onion soup mix. It’s that stuff you find in the soup aisle, and it’s got that nice oniony flavor. You mix that in with the cream real good, and it’ll thicken up nice. I like to add a little bit of salt and pepper too, but that’s up to ya. Some folks like it spicy, others don’t. You decide.
Now, you gotta get a baking dish. I usually use one of them glass ones, nice and big so everything fits. Start by layering them potato slices in the dish, nice and neat. Put down a layer, then pour a little bit of that sauce on top. Then keep layering potatoes and sauce till ya run outta potatoes or the dish is full. Don’t forget to cover the top with that sauce, ya want every bit of them potatoes soaked in it.
Once it’s all layered up, take some cheese, any kind you like. I use shredded cheddar, but mozzarella’s good too. Sprinkle it over the top. Don’t be shy with the cheese, it makes it all melty and gooey. If ya want a little extra flavor, you can sprinkle some fried onions on top too. Gives it a nice crunch, and a bit of extra oniony taste.
Now, it’s time to bake it. Preheat your oven to about 375°F (190°C). Cover the baking dish with some foil so it don’t dry out, and bake it for about 45 minutes. After that, take the foil off and bake it for another 15 minutes or so, till the top gets nice and golden and bubbly. You’ll know it’s ready when you can poke a fork in them potatoes and it goes in real easy.
When it’s done, let it sit for a few minutes before serving. It’ll be hot, and you don’t wanna burn your mouth. Trust me, I’ve done that more times than I care to count. You can serve this as a side dish, or if you’re like me, just eat it all on its own. It’s filling and so delicious. Makes for a great dinner or even a potluck dish if you’ve got a bunch of folks coming over.
So there ya have it, French Onion Potato Bake. Simple, tasty, and sure to please just about anyone. Give it a try and I promise, ya won’t be disappointed. And if you got any leftovers (I doubt it), it’s even better the next day!
