Well now, if you’re lookin’ to make somethin’ sweet for breakfast that’s gonna fill you up good, I reckon you oughta try Paula Deen’s overnight French toast. It’s one of them dishes that’ll make ya feel like you’re havin’ a special treat without havin’ to spend all day in the kitchen. It’s easy, it’s delicious, and it’ll sure have your family comin’ back for seconds!
Now, before we get started, lemme tell ya somethin’ important. When it comes to French toast, the bread you pick matters a lot. Don’t be usin’ no flimsy white bread like you might for a sandwich. You want somethin’ hearty, like brioche or challah, or even raisin bread if you like a little sweet kick to it. And don’t go usin’ fresh bread right outta the bag! You want that bread to be just a bit stale, so it don’t fall apart when you soak it in that rich custard mix. Stale bread holds up better and soaks up all the flavors without turnin’ into mush.
Now, the night before you’re gonna make this here overnight French toast, get yourself a big ol’ bowl and crack about 8 eggs in there. Whisk ‘em real good, like you’re makin’ a scrambled egg. Add in a cup of milk, some cinnamon, a little vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix it all up till it looks nice and smooth. This here is the custard that’s gonna soak into that bread.
Cut your bread into thick slices, ‘bout 1 inch thick or so. Then, in a baking dish, lay the slices of bread down, nice and snug, coverin’ the whole bottom of the dish. Once you got the bread all packed in there, pour the custard mix over the top, makin’ sure every piece of bread gets a good soak. If there’s any extra, just pour it on top. You don’t wanna leave nothin’ behind! Cover the dish with some plastic wrap or a lid, and put it in the fridge overnight. That way, all that custard gets absorbed into the bread, and in the mornin’ it’s gonna bake up real nice.
Come breakfast time, preheat that oven to 350°F, or ‘round 175°C if you’re usin’ that fancy metric system. Take the dish out the fridge, toss a little extra butter or cinnamon sugar on top, and pop it in the oven for about 45 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the top is golden brown and the custard is all set inside. Just make sure you don’t overcook it, or you’ll end up with somethin’ too dry. You want it to be soft and gooey on the inside, with a nice crispy top.
Now, when it’s all baked and done, don’t forget to dress it up right! You can top it with fresh berries, or bananas if you like. A drizzle of maple syrup on top wouldn’t hurt neither. And if you really wanna go all out, maybe a dollop of whipped cream. It’s like a big ol’ sweet breakfast hug for your belly!
If you’ve got leftovers (which is rare, let me tell ya), you can store it in the fridge. Just make sure you don’t leave it out for too long, or it’ll spoil. You can eat leftovers for a couple of days, but don’t push it too far. Food safety is real important, y’all!
So there you have it, folks. A simple, easy, and downright delicious breakfast that’ll make you feel like you’ve gone to a fancy restaurant without even leavin’ your kitchen. Paula Deen’s overnight French toast is sure to be a hit, so go ahead and give it a try!
